Career: what comes first?
You cannot buy back the time that you spend doing things that are not rewarding and satisfying.
In career workshops and as an executive career coach I am often asked by clients what they should do, for example what type of certifications should they get or how should they present their CV, their social media profiles, etc… I challenge them to first define what they DESIRE, then to assess their own strengths and weaknesses relative to their objective, and based on that to decide on steps to take.
My personal experience is that in the short term, what drives me to get up joyfully every morning (well, on most days :) ) are the many faceted people-oriented challenges in my business which are ever stimulating. But what keeps me satisfied in the long term is the belief that I contribute to building material prosperity AND quality of life, happiness and better interpersonal relations.
I like to challenge others to asking themselves: what type of professional activity makes you happy? Consider Confucius: Choose a job that you love and you will never work a day in your life.
