People Management and Science Fiction & Fantasy: Patterns

What do People Management and Sci & Fi have in common? For myself, they are my two primary interests. But in a general sense, independently of my own interest, I also thought it was obvious that they have some important points in common.

Blog - People Management and Science Fiction & Fantasy: Patterns

I was giving a talk at a Service Club about Sci Fi & Fantasy: designing, reading & watching stories and playing video games. I knew that there where many things about my area of interest that would be new for the audience. But when someone asked about the connection to my vocation in the area of People Management & Organizational Development I was taken by surprise.

Because I felt it was self-evident I had never thought about how to explain it and I struggled to formulate a clear answer. Here is what I should have said:

  • A central objective of People Management & Organizational Development is to design and facilitate ways, including innovative organizational formats, for people to work together to achieve objectives such as material prosperity, meaningful contribution to society, satisfaction of competitive impulses and other forms of self-actualization, all this within the constraints given by societal values, social behaviors and technological means

  • A central theme of Sci Fi & Fantasy is to construct fictive societies and define, with no prior constraints, their societal values, social behaviors and technological means, and then to see how people in these societies might be organized and how they might strive to achieve objectives such as material prosperity, meaningful contribution to society, satisfaction of competitive impulses and other forms of self-actualization

How can these observations help us set priorities?
A possible conclusion: in order to identify activities, whether vocational or recreational, that will be fulfilling for you, worth your time, it can be helpful to identify the underlying reason of why you are passionate about this activity, and perhaps a common patter will emerge across different areas.
